Why upgrade your servers memory

Adding more memory can be a very cost effective way of improving your application, database or virtual machine server as the number of users using a server increases.

Why get advice before upgrading your servers memory?
Upgrading the amount of memory in a server can be more complicated than with a desktop computer, as you need to think about whether your servers use ECC (error correcting) memory, which memory sockets should be used with your current processor configuration (most servers can take more than one processor) and other factors that make it harder than just nipping out to your local PC retailer and purchasing and fitting some additional memory.

Why get advice before upgrading your servers hard disk?

Fitting an additional disk to your server might seem quite straight forward but what if you have used all the hard drive bays or you want to upgrade the hard disk with the operating system installed on it for better performance? You could take the server down over the weekend and spend most of the weekend reinstalling and testing, or we could migrate your existing install to the new disk saving you the time and effort trying to set everything backup again.

What about server disk RAID arrays?
Many servers also use two or more disks grouped together into one virtual disk to provide fault tolerance and possibly also increased performance, this is commonly referred to as a RAID array.

RAID arrays provide many benefits but they do complicate server disk upgrades as if the server is configured to use RAID you can’t just swap out one of the disks for a larger one to get more available disk space or better performance. We can assist you in working out if your server uses a RAID array and help with the planning and implementation of a disk upgrade to your servers RAID array.
